Benoît Marguet – A Pioneer of Biodynamic Champagne
Benoît Marguet is one of the few champions of biodynamic winemaking in Champagne, crafting wines that embody the perfect harmony between nature and human artistry—pure life energy in every bottle. The first-ever certified organic prestige Champagne, Sapience, was released in 2006 in collaboration with consulting oenologist Hervé Jestin. At that time, Marguet had just begun transitioning his own vineyards to biodynamic practices, so he initially sourced grapes from three esteemed winemaker friends: Vincent Laval (Pinot Meunier from Cumières), David Léclapart (Chardonnay from Trépail), and Benoît Lahaye (Pinot Noir from Bouzy).
The wine was released under two labels: Sapience and Champagne Jestin. The 2015 vintage was disgorged in March 2023. Sapience Premier Cru Extra Brut is a Champagne worthy of the most special occasions.
Champagne Marguet: A Legacy of Innovation
Champagne Marguet is based in Ambonnay, nestled among the historic Champagne towns of Reims, Épernay, and Châlons-en-Champagne. The estate was founded in 1870 by the Bonnerave brothers and was originally known as Marguet-Bonnerave. Since 2005, it has been called Champagne Marguet Père et Fils. Today, Benoît Marguet, a fifth-generation winemaker, leads the family estate with a deep commitment to sustainability and terroir-driven winemaking.
The family owns approximately 10 hectares of vineyards in Ambonnay, Bouzy, and Mailly, with 7 hectares classified as Grand Cru. Benoît obtained biodynamic certification in 2009 and follows a low-sulfite approach in winemaking. Horses are used in the vineyards to enhance soil bioactivity, reinforcing Marguet’s philosophy that true terroir expression comes from the synergy between soil, vines, and living organisms.
Marguet Champagnes are a striking combination of power, generosity, and vibrancy. They have earned recognition from top wine critics worldwide and are featured on the wine lists of some of the finest restaurants across the globe.
