Piero Busso – Tradition and Excellence in Barbaresco
Piero Busso is one of the most respected wineries in the Barbaresco region, located in Neive, Piedmont, Italy. Founded in 1953 by Guido Busso, the estate has always been dedicated to growing Nebbiolo and producing wines that authentically express the character of their terroir. Today, the winery is managed by Piero Busso, together with his wife and two children, continuing the family tradition with a commitment to sustainable and organic winemaking.
Vineyards and Terroir
The estate covers 10 hectares of vineyards, spread across some of the finest crus in Barbaresco:
- Albesani (Neive) – the historic heart of the winery, producing structured and complex wines.
- Bricco Mondino (Neive) – a hill known for its open, fruit-forward, and elegant Barbaresco.
- Gallina (Neive) – renowned for its silky tannins and depth of flavor.
- San Stunet (Treiso) – contributing minerality and structure to the wines.
The vineyards are positioned at altitudes ranging from 240 to 280 meters above sea level, with limestone-sandy and clay soils, ensuring optimal sun exposure and ideal growing conditions.
Winemaking Philosophy
Piero Busso follows a natural and organic approach to winemaking. Although officially certified organic starting from the 2019 vintage, the estate has always practiced sustainable and environmentally conscious viticulture.
- All vineyard work is done by hand, including the harvest, where grapes are carefully placed in small boxes to preserve their integrity before destemming.
- Each vineyard is vinified separately to highlight its unique characteristics.
- No chemicals or industrial additives are used. Instead, fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts.
- Maceration is long and slow, lasting up to 60 days, to extract maximum depth and complexity.
- Malolactic fermentation takes place in oak, followed by aging in large Slavonian oak casks (botti) for at least 18 months.
- The wines are unfined and unfiltered, preserving their natural expression.
- Bottle aging for a minimum of 6 months before release ensures balance and refinement.
