Discovering Castello di Fonterutoli’s author-designed cellar: between architecture and wine

The cellar stands between Castellina in Chianti and Siena, integrated into the landscape while overlooking the estate’s slopes. Agnese Mazzei designed it to reconcile architectural form, production functionality and reduced environmental impact. Three descending levels allow grapes received in the square to move through vinification and maturation by gravity. Parcel-scale microvinification preserves the characteristics of individual terroirs. At the lowest level, five water-bearing layers discovered during construction flow across exposed rock, maintaining stable temperature and humidity without external energy. The building belongs to the 14-cellar Toscana Wine Architecture circuit.
