Trentino Alto Adige

Also called Südtirol · South Tyrol

199 wineries, 1,388 wines and 8 appellations. Italy's northernmost region is two lands in one valley. Alto Adige, or Südtirol, belonged to Austria until the First World War and still speaks mostly German; Trentino, to the south, is Italian but just as Alpine. Both follow the Adige and its side valleys, with vineyards on the valley floors, on steep slopes and on terraces that climb high into the mountains. Read more ↓

About the region

About Trentino Alto Adige

The region is renowned for cool-climate, varietally labelled wines of consistently high quality, and for a strong tradition of cooperative wineries. In 2022 it made a near-record 1.3 million hectolitres from 15,800 hectares, more than 70 per cent of it white. Chardonnay leads with 22 per cent of the vineyards, followed by Pinot Grigio at 19 and the red Schiava, or Vernatsch, at 9. Native reds such as Lagrein around Bolzano and Teroldego on the Rotaliano plain sit alongside the white Gewürztraminer, whose name comes from the village of Tramin.

Trentino-Alto Adige has no DOCG. Its nine DOCs — among them Alto Adige, Trentino, Teroldego Rotaliano and Trento, for classic-method sparkling wine — cover 84 per cent of production, and nearly all the rest falls under one of four IGPs.
