Piedmont

Piedmont is the country of Barolo and Barbaresco, but its most planted grape is Barbera, with 31 per cent of the vineyards, followed by Moscato at 22, Dolcetto at 13 and Nebbiolo at 10, alongside Cortese for Gavi, Arneis in the Roero and Erbaluce near Ivrea. In 2022 the region made about 2.4 million hectolitres from 43,536 hectares, about 60 per cent red. What stands out is quality: 94 per cent of it is DOC or DOCG wine, and Piedmont has no IGP at all.

It has more DOCGs than any other region — nineteen — and, level with Tuscany, the most DOCs, 41.
