The Black Rooster legend leads to Fonterutoli

Fonterutoli hosted peace treaties between Florence and Siena in 1202 and 1208, when Chianti passed to Florentine control. Tradition tells that the cities agreed to place their border where two riders met after departing at cockcrow. Florence used a black rooster kept without food; it crowed before dawn and gave the Florentine rider a long head start. The riders met at Fonterutoli, almost within sight of Siena. Florence established its frontier along Castellina, Radda and Gaiole and selected the Black Rooster as the emblem of the Military and Administrative Alliance of Chianti.
