Contratto cellars receive UNESCO World Heritage recognition

In June 2014, the approximately 5,000 m² of underground galleries at Contratto joined the other historic cathedral cellars of Canelli within a UNESCO World Heritage site. The application had been under preparation for years: former owner Carlo Bocchino handled the earlier documentation, and the Rivetti family received the final inspections after acquiring the winery.

The designation placed Contratto among four Canelli wineries identified as owning cellars covered by the inscription. The owners treated the recognition as both an honour and a duty to preserve the property. Despite the staffing commitment involved, Contratto kept the winery accessible to visitors seven days a week, including national holidays, as an expression of the principle that World Heritage belongs to everyone.
