Some thoughts on the 2025 harvest

Winter and early spring brought rainfall above the local average, continuing the longer-term rise from approximately 600 mm annually in the 1990s to around 800 mm in recent decades. Following warmth and intermittent spring rain, June began a long, hot, dry and windy summer. September rain relieved the vines without creating serious humidity problems because of continued ventilation.

Harvest began with Vermentino on 13 September. Campo Bianco followed on 15 September, then Syrah, Sangiovese and the different Jassarte lots; Cabernet Sauvignon concluded the harvest on 28 September. Ripening windows were compressed, leaving few pauses between parcels. Campo Lupinaio produced its first partial crop at approximately 30% of potential. Parcels affected by the Fossa di Bolgheri flood of 23 September 2024 showed unusually strong growth, probably because deposited debris enriched their organic matter. Overall yield was slightly below average, likely because of reduced fruit set in June, but the fruit was healthy, aromatic and concentrated without becoming excessive.
