Corks to recycle: a mom at work

Sara reflects on combining life as a wine entrepreneur with raising four children, including peak periods when work can exceed ten hours a day. Corks from the many bottles opened in the tasting room became the material for shared activities. Unfinished bottles are protected with filters and special closures, while used corks collect in a dedicated container.

Most are recycled by the Accipicchia cooperative in Alba, which turns them into key rings. Cork’s natural impermeability, thermal inertia, softness, durability and low weight also make it suitable for home reuse. Sara proposes seven projects: sliced-cork trivets or coasters; whole-cork kitchen or bathroom mats; grooved place-card holders; Christmas trees, garlands and toy figures; carved stamps for children; memo boards; and a simple balancing game in which a cork is wedged between nose and lip. The ideas turn waste into useful objects, decorations and family play.
