The Black Rooster legend leads to Fonterutoli

Fonterutoli hosted peace treaties between Florence and Siena in 1202 and 1208. In the traditional story, the rival cities agreed that two knights would ride at cockcrow and set the frontier where they met. Florence's underfed black rooster crowed before dawn, giving its rider a decisive advantage; the knights met at Fonterutoli, close to Siena. Florence extended its frontier to the line of Castellina, Radda and Gaiole, and the Military and Administrative Alliance of Chianti adopted the Black Rooster as its shield.
