The Art of Winemaking at Terralsole: Where Tradition Meets Innovation
Terralsole emerged from Mario Bollag’s ambition to unite Tuscany, wine and visual art, with Athena Tergis Bollag’s musical career adding another creative dimension. The name means “Land Toward the Sun,” and the estate’s identity treats each vintage as both an agricultural product and an artistic interpretation of Montalcino.
The vineyards occupy two contrasting properties. Elevated Pian Bossolino has marl and limestone soils that support slower ripening and expressive aromas. Lower Fonte Lattaia contains marine deposits and clay, giving Sangiovese greater robustness and structure.
Organic fertilizers, cover crops and biodiversity preservation form the basis of sustainable vineyard management. Full organic certification was achieved in 2018.
Mario and Athena personally oversee the hand harvest at peak ripeness. Small picking boxes protect the fruit before gentle destemming. Temperature-controlled tanks in the cantina support controlled extraction of colour, aroma and flavour. Brunello then matures in 600-litre tonneaux made from Allier forest oak.
Visitor experiences extend this combination of wine, place and creativity through guided tours, tastings and stays in estate accommodation. Wine Club activities add access to limited releases, personalized tastings and events centred on Tuscan food and wine culture.
