Vineyard and terroir
The estate’s first wine takes its name from Poggio ai Ginepri, the area where it originated in 2002. Its west-facing vineyards lie less than a kilometre from the sea at 20–80 m elevation. Red aeolian sands characteristic of Donoratico give rise to an approachable, immediately appealing style. Planting density is 6,500 vines per hectare, with a yield of 90 quintals of grapes per hectare.
Grapes
The 2022 blend is 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand. Alcoholic fermentation and maceration take place together in stainless-steel tanks over 25 days. The technical sheet gives a controlled temperature of 28–30°C. Malolactic fermentation is divided equally between stainless steel and used 225 L French-oak barrels.
Ageing
Maturation lasts six months, with 50% of the wine held in stainless-steel tanks and 50% in used 225 L French-oak barrels. A further three months of bottle ageing follows.
Tasting profile
Crystalline ruby in colour, the wine evokes Mediterranean scrub and earthy aromas. The palate is presented as delicate and highly drinkable, while retaining the aromatic and structural character of the red varieties.
Vintage notes
The 2021 season was hot and dry, yet delivered healthy, fully ripe grapes and strong quality and quantity. The estate harvest ran from 2 September to 1 October, with the grapes for Poggio ai Ginepri picked in the second week. Summer-like weather, winds from east and west and intense sunlight favoured Cabernet Sauvignon ripening and polyphenol development. Fermentation and extraction proceeded evenly, producing aromatically expressive, structured wines.
Label / history
Poggio ai Ginepri was Argentiera’s first wine, produced in 2002 from the eponymous area. Its identity is tied to the nearby sea and to vines rooting deeply through Donoratico’s sand in search of water.
