Campania

184 cantine, 392 vini e 19 denominazioni. Campania faces the Tyrrhenian Sea around Naples, and much of its vine country is volcanic — the slopes of Vesuvius and the Campi Flegrei, and the layers of ash that eruptions spread inland over the hills of Irpinia. Wine has a long memory here: the Romans prized Falernian above almost every other wine, and it came from the north of the region. Continua a leggere ↓

Campania in breve

Campania is known today for reds from Aglianico, its most planted grape at 34 per cent, and for whites from native varieties — Falanghina, Fiano and Greco — with Piedirosso and Coda di Volpe among the others. In 2022 it had 25,600 hectares of registered vineyards and made almost 1.5 million hectolitres, mostly table wine, with only 19 per cent under a DOC or DOCG.

Its four DOCGs sit inland, three of them in Irpinia around Avellino: Taurasi, the region's great Aglianico, and the two whites Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo. The fourth, Aglianico del Taburno, lies around Monte Taburno in the province of Benevento. The region also has fifteen DOCs, among them Lacryma Christi on the slopes of Vesuvius, and ten IGPs.
