Lombardia

Detto anche Lombardy

197 cantine, 479 vini e 25 denominazioni. Lombardy stretches from the Swiss border south to the Po, around Milan, taking in the Alpine valleys, the great lakes and the plain. Its wine is scattered across very different corners: the terraced Nebbiolo of the Valtellina high in the Alps, the sparkling wines of Franciacorta on Lake Iseo, Lugana on the southern shore of Lake Garda, the hills of Bergamo, and south of the Po the Oltrepò Pavese, its largest wine area. La regione

Lombardia in breve

The region had 23,400 hectares of vineyards and, in a year of difficult weather, made just over 1.2 million hectolitres in 2022, slightly more white than red and rosé. Its most planted grapes reflect that variety: Croatina 17 per cent, Pinot Nero 14, Chardonnay 13 and Barbera 12.

Lombardy has five DOCGs. Franciacorta and Oltrepò Pavese Metodo Classico are both bottle-fermented sparkling wines; Valtellina Superiore and Sforzato di Valtellina are Nebbiolo from the Alpine terraces, the second made from dried grapes; and Moscato di Scanzo is a rare sweet red from the hills of Bergamo. There are also 21 DOCs and 15 IGPs.
