Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The Montebuono vineyard lies beside Barbacarlo. Its vines are almost 100 years old, and the site is slightly less steep than Barbacarlo.
Grapes
The blend combines Croatina, Uva Rara and Ughetta with a small proportion of Barbera.
Vinification
Each variety is vinified separately. Fermentation occurs naturally, without temperature control, in old oak barrels, some of which are 20 years old. In April or May of the following year, the separate wines are transferred to a single barrel and allowed to rest before being bottled according to the phases of the Moon. Fermentation is unfinished at bottling and continues in the bottle.
Ageing
The wine matures in bottle rather than in wood, in accordance with Lino Maga’s approach.
Label / history
Lino Maga calls Montebuono the “Wine of Napoleon.” According to the story behind the name, Napoleon stopped in Broni after the Battle of Marengo and appreciated a wine made from grapes grown in the Montebuono vineyard. The site subsequently also became known as “Napoleon’s Hill.”
