Barolo is the “City of Wine for 2021”
The City of Wine Association awarded Barolo the title of Italian City of Wine 2021 on 7 November 2020. The candidacy centred on a journey between tradition and modernity, reflecting Barolo’s historical identity and its ability to renew itself and reach an international audience.
The municipality developed the programme with the Barolo & Castle Foundation, which also assumed responsibility for implementing the calendar. Twenty-four major initiatives were planned, including a Hall of Fame induction ceremony for leading figures in Italian wine at the Wine Museum; international partnerships between museums and wine territories; projects connecting countryside and city; the Autumn Convention of the Cities of Wine; and contemporary-art exhibitions in Barolo cellars in collaboration with Artissima. Large Barolo tastings were also envisaged, subject to public-health conditions.
