Vineyard and terroir
The Negroamaro grows in fairly dry soils containing limestone, clay and silica. Apulia is the sunniest region in Italy, and the nearby Mediterranean Sea provides steady cooling from sea breezes. This climate helps produce refined grapes with balanced fruit character.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested early in the morning to prevent premature oxidation caused by sun and heat. They go straight to the winery's cellars and are gently pressed. Fermentation and ten days of maceration take place at a controlled temperature, followed by malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine ages in steel tanks until June of the following year, a period of 8–9 months.
Label / history
The new look of the Feudo Monaci label was inspired by the legend of Scuma, a beautiful young woman carried in by the sea foam who became queen of the mermaids. The design reflects the winery's connection to its land and history.
Castello Monaci is in Salento, Apulia. It makes wines from local varieties traditionally grown in Southern Italy, including Primitivo, Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera, in two ranges: Castello Monaci and Feudo Monaci. The estate includes a XVI-century summer palace once owned by monks, cellars, more than 350 hectares of vineyards, and additional land near Brindisi on the Adriatic coast used for experimental plantings of white grape varieties. The owner is technical director Andrea Leonardi, who oversees the winemaking.
