Vineyard and terroir
The grapes come from vineyards in Benevento, at 450–550 m above sea level. The soils are rich in lava and minerals. Breezes from the Bay of Naples cool the vines. Over the centuries these breezes have carried volcanic ash from Vesuvius inland, which gives the soil its distinctive character.
Vinification
The grapes are gently destemmed and carefully pressed. Maceration takes place in stainless steel tanks for 10–15 days at 26 °C. Winemaker Marco Flacco works with minimal intervention to preserve the wine's natural character.
Ageing
The wine ages for 8 months in barrels.
Tasting profile
Aglianico is known for its firm tannins, but here it is made into a soft, vividly aromatic wine.
Label / history
"Lava" is a range within Terre del Vulcano, a new Farnese project. Farnese works with small producers in Campania whose vineyards lie on volcanic soils. These soils owe their composition to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius 2000 years ago. Marco Flacco was brought in to create the range. He favours balanced, complex wines that stay true to their terroir.
