Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from Mazzon/Egna, at 300–400 metres above sea level. The Guyot-trained vines were planted between 1992 and 1999 at approximately 6,500 plants per hectare. The technical description gives a western orientation and sandy-loam soils rich in clay and limestone. The broader estate description also refers to poor gravel soils and a south-west exposure. Large day-to-night temperature differences shape the site, with warm southerly winds alternating with cool air from the Dolomites.
Grapes
Pinot Noir (Blauburgunder).
Vinification
Grapes undergo strict manual selection in the vineyard. Processing relies on gravity during the first year, with minimal mechanical intervention in the cellar. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks.
Ageing
The wine was bottled after 20 months and then matured in bottle at the estate before release.
Technical data
The 2015 Selection has 14.5% alcohol, acidity of 4.8‰ and 0.5 g/L residual sugar. Production was fewer than 2,000 bottles.
Tasting profile
Ruby red in colour, with an elegant, finely fruited aroma. The palate combines balanced acidity and well-integrated tannins with rose hip, red cherry and dried fig, followed by hints of tobacco and dark chocolate.
Vintage notes
Alexander Gottardi produced Selection wines in 2015, 2016 and 2017, three particularly successful Pinot Noir vintages. Conceived as a tier above the Riserva, the wines were held back for release when ready to drink, demonstrating the variety’s ageing capacity in Mazzon.
Label / history
The Gottardi family began producing Pinot Noir in Mazzon in 1995. The first Selection was made in 2015.
