Vineyard and terroir
The Colorino comes from a single vineyard at Tenuta Montemasso in Greve in Chianti, south of Florence. Montemasso has 30 hectares of vineyards planted on steep slopes within the Chianti Classico winegrowing area.
Grapes
100% Colorino.
Vinification
Alcoholic fermentation and roughly 28 days of maceration take place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, assisted by periodic pump-overs and délestage. Malolactic fermentation is described as taking place in stainless steel on the product page and in wood in the 2019 technical sheet.
Ageing
The full maturation period is 36 months: approximately 12 months in French barriques, 12 months in amphorae and 12 months in stainless steel.
Technical data
Alcohol: 14.5%. The 2021 shop release is presented in a 0.75 L bottle and wooden box. Production comprises a very limited quantity of numbered bottles reserved for Wine Club members and estate visitors.
Tasting profile
The colour is an intense, opaque purple red with ruby highlights. The bouquet combines dark and red fruit—plum, blackberry, redcurrant and macerated cherry—with rose and violet. The palate is rich, structured and persistent, with soft, velvety tannins, balsamic nuances and a pleasantly bitter, rose-tinged finish.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18 °C. Pair with delicately spiced or sweet-and-sour preparations, soups, risottos and vegetable-based first courses, especially dishes featuring pumpkin or chestnuts.
Vintage notes
The 2019 vintage enjoyed favourable conditions for ripening and picking.
Label / history
Colorino takes its name from the deep pigmentation of its skins; historically, the grape was used to add colour to wine. A.D. 1085 refers to the earliest official document recording vine cultivation at the Poggio Casciano estate. Ruffino is among the small number of Tuscan producers that vinify Colorino as a varietal wine. The first vintage was 2017.
