Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
Tumulus pays tribute to the Etruscans who inhabited the Potentino valley, cultivating its land and producing wine and olive oil. The wine is made using ancient basins carved from volcanic stone, locally called pestarole or palmenti.
Grapes
Sangiovese.
Vinification
The grapes are crushed vigorously with bare feet in the volcanic-stone basins. The crushed fruit and juice then pass into a small stainless-steel vessel, where indigenous yeasts naturally present in the stone and surrounding environment initiate spontaneous fermentation. The skins are removed after two weeks. Nothing is added during the process: neither cultivated yeast nor sulphites.
Ageing
The wine is bottled after six months in reusable ceramic flasks closed with reusable silicone corks.
Vintage notes
The vintages are distinguished on the product page by flask colour: cream for 2021, blue for 2022, red for 2023 and mixed colours for 2024.
Label / history
The name Tumulus derives from the Latin “tumere,” meaning to swell, and can denote a mound, small hill or tomb. Its production method is conceived as a link to the wine culture of the valley approximately 2,500 years ago. Comparable ancient stone winemaking basins have been found around Castello di Potentino and elsewhere in Italy, as well as in Spain, Israel, Iraq and Georgia.
