Twenty years of the Carapace concept
The anniversary marked 20 years since Arnaldo Pomodoro conceived the Carapace in 2005. The retrospective connected the project with the Lunelli family's acquisition of historic vineyards in Bevagna and Montefalco in 2001 and the first Montefalco Sagrantino vintage in 2003.
Pomodoro imagined a dome emerging from the earth and evoking the strength of nature. Its tortoise-shell form symbolized longevity, while cracks in the copper surface recalled vineyard furrows and the action of time on wine. The completed structure was inaugurated in 2012 as the first sculpture in which people could live and work.
The retrospective also recalled the UNESCO La Fabbrica nel Paesaggio award, the building's appearance at the Venice Biennale and its number-25 ranking in World's Best Vineyards 2024. It traced the family–artist relationship from Gino Lunelli's first meeting with Pomodoro in 1984 through the 1992 disc, the 2002 Centenarium and the continuing support of the Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro.
