Vineyard and terroir

Scabrezza is produced at Tenuta Monteloro near Florence, just behind Fiesole on the southern foothills of the Apennines. The estate lies at approximately 500 m above sea level and has a cool year-round climate suited to aromatic white varieties. The vineyard soils are loamy and tend towards calcareous, within an estate characterized by mineral-rich soils.

Grapes

100% Pinot Grigio.

Vinification

For the 2025 vintage, the grapes were picked during the cool early-morning hours and transferred immediately to the cellar. After destemming and gentle pressing, the must entered stainless-steel vats and was chilled to 10 °C to clarify naturally. It was racked after 48 hours, then fermented in other tanks at a maximum temperature of 16 °C.

Ageing

The 2025 wine remained in stainless-steel vats at a controlled 10 °C until bottling at the end of March 2026.

Tasting profile

Scabrezza 2025 is straw yellow. Its intense nose combines passion fruit, pink grapefruit and pineapple. The palate is fresh and balanced, with a pleasant finish recalling the fruit found on the nose.

Vintage notes

The 2025 season was generally balanced. Mild winter temperatures and frequent rain in January and February built adequate groundwater reserves and supported regular vine dormancy. Cool spring conditions brought alternating dry periods and well-distributed rainfall in March, followed by a gradual rise in temperature without extremes during April and May. Beneficial rain sustained vegetative growth.

Summer was warm and bright but avoided excessive conditions. Day-night temperature variation in June and July helped retain acidity, while August was dry and breezy with occasional rain supporting even ripening. The Pinot Grigio reached harvest in healthy condition, with full aromatic maturity and a fresh, savory profile.

Label / history

Scabrezza’s label pays tribute to Dante by reproducing a verse dedicated to Beatrice in the Divine Comedy. The name comes from an old hydrological term for measuring the flow of rivers and streams, recalling the historic drainage channels, fishing weirs and stone bridges still found around the estate. Monteloro’s emblem combines a triton’s body and dragon wings into the letter “M,” referring to traditions linking this landscape with Dante and Beatrice Portinari.
