Vineyard and terroir
The Moscato Bianco comes from south-facing vineyards at Tenuta San Carlo in Partinico, in the province of Palermo. Planting density is 5,000 vines per hectare, with a yield of 65 quintals per hectare (6.5 tonnes per hectare).
Grapes
100% Moscato Bianco. The estate recovered surviving clones of this variety to revive a wine whose history in the area reaches back to the nineteenth century.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand in the second week of September at an advanced stage of ripeness and selected in the vineyard. They are placed in a single layer in perforated crates holding approximately 3 kg each. Drying takes place in the cellar until the fruit has lost 50% of its original weight.
The dried grapes undergo very gentle pressing, followed by 12 hours of static settling. Fermentation then takes place in small oak barrels.
Ageing
The wine remains in the same small oak barrels until bottling.
Technical data
Only a very small number of individually numbered bottles is produced.
Label / history
Moscato dello Zucco traces its origins to the nineteenth century, when Henri d’Orléans, Duke of Aumale, produced it in the area between Partinico and Terrasini. It was already distributed across Europe and regarded at the time as one of Italy’s leading Moscato wines. Production later disappeared almost entirely. Its revival followed the recovery of surviving Moscato Bianco clones. The wine’s amber-fragment imagery evokes this history and its connection with the Duke of Aumale.
