Vineyard and terroir
The Masseria Altemura estate lies in the heart of Salento, roughly equidistant from the Ionian and Adriatic seas that surround Puglia. It covers around 300 ha, of which 150 ha are vineyards. The climate is pleasant, with cooling sea breezes, and the location is favourable for growing grapes. The soil is red, with limestone stones emerging from it that form a mirror-like surface in the sun.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested in the first week of September, when some are already slightly overripe. They are destemmed and gently pressed, and the must is fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled 26 °C.
Ageing
The wine ages for 12 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, then rests a further 6 months in bottle.
Tasting profile
Fresh and soft at once, with a well-balanced structure, complexity and richness. The palate is smooth and enveloping, full of fruit. The nose brings notes of plums and sweet jam.
Serving and pairing
Serve slightly chilled with roast meat or pasta.
Label / history
The name comes from sasso, the Italian word for "stone", and refers to the limestone stones in Salento's red soil. The wine was created from a desire to make a Primitivo with a distinctive personality. The Masseria Altemura estate has been owned by the Zonin family since 2000.
