23 Moldovan Producers Set for ProWine Shanghai

From November 10–12, 23 Moldovan wine and spirits producers will meet Chinese importers and distributors at ProWine Shanghai, with local grape varieties central to the delegation’s presentation.

Moldova’s delegation in Shanghai

At ProWine Shanghai from November 10–12, a delegation of 23 Moldovan wine and spirits producers will seek business with Chinese importers and distributors. The Wine of Moldova national stand will be in Hall 5 at W5B40. The National Office for Vine and Wine (ONVV) is organizing the wineries’ participation in the exhibition.1

The stand will feature Fetească Neagră, Fetească Albă, Rară Neagră, Viorica, Floricica, Codrinschi and Riton. These varieties give buyers alternatives to familiar Cabernet and Chardonnay, while Moldova also produces wines from international grapes and blends.1

On November 11, the masterclass “The Taste of Discovery: Moldova’s Indigenous Grape Varieties” will present 8 wines from 13:15 to 14:45.1

An export-led wine industry

Moldova has more than 7,000 years of winemaking history, but its present industry depends heavily on overseas sales. Approximately 85% of production is exported to more than 70 countries and territories. About 50,000 farmers own vineyards, and wine provides income for roughly 25% of the national workforce.1

Chinese customs data put Moldova’s wine exports to China at US$1.43 million during the first 9 months of 2026. Moldova has progressively redirected exports away from Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States toward Western markets. The European Union receives about 60% of its wine exports, while Africa, Romania, South Korea and Japan are also important destinations.1

Moldovan wines earned more than 7,000 awards in international competitions over the past 10 years. In Shanghai, prospective importers will be able to taste the wines and discuss commercial terms directly. ONVV is presenting the country’s offer around quality and competitive prices.1

The country’s protected origins

Moldova has 3 wine regions with Protected Geographical Indication status. Codru is associated with white and sparkling wines; Valul lui Traian makes a broad range of reds and whites; and Ștefan Vodă is recognized for single-varietal red wines and blends.1

The delegation will also show Divin, Moldova’s traditional grape brandy. It is distilled from wine, matured in oak barrels and protected by its own geographical indication.1

Commercial objectives in China

Moldovan producers are seeking greater recognition and long-term relationships with Chinese importers and distributors. Their task is to explain less familiar grape names and demonstrate how the wines could fit into importers’ portfolios; those same local varieties also provide a point of difference from established origins.1
