Emilia Romagna
Also called Emilia-Romagna
166 wineries, 511 wines and 21 appellations. Emilia-Romagna runs across the top of the peninsula south of the Po, from the Adriatic almost to the Tyrrhenian, joining two historic lands: Emilia in the west, around Piacenza, Parma, Reggio and Modena, and Romagna on the coast to the east. Most of its vines grow on the plain and on the first hills of the Apennines, and it is one of Italy's great food regions as much as a wine one. Read more ↓

Appellations of Emilia Romagna
About Emilia Romagna
By volume it is usually third among Italian regions: 6.1 million hectolitres in 2022, after Veneto and Puglia, from 53,000 hectares, only the fifth-largest vineyard area. Trebbiano covers 30 per cent, Lambrusco 18 and Sangiovese 16, and slightly more white wine is made than red.
Emilia is the home of Lambrusco, the fizzy red now coming back into fashion, made in several DOCs around Modena and Reggio, while the hills of Piacenza make Gutturnio from Barbera and Bonarda. Romagna has its own Sangiovese and the white Albana, which as Romagna Albana is one of the region's two DOCGs; the other is Colli Bolognesi Classico Pignoletto, from the hills south-west of Bologna. The region has nineteen DOCs and nine IGPs in all.
