U.S. still-wine retail sales fall more than 4% by value

NielsenIQ data cited by WineBusiness Monthly show that U.S. retail sales of still wine declined in the 4 weeks through 8 August, while white wine showed greater resilience and Tetra packaging gained over a longer period.

Still wine declines in value and volume

NielsenIQ tracking reported by WineBusiness Monthly shows that U.S. retail sales of still wine fell by more than 4% in dollar value and more than 5% in volume during the 4 weeks ended 8 August. The simultaneous declines indicate continued pressure on the category, with consumers buying fewer units and sales revenue also weakening.1

Volume contracted faster than dollar sales. That difference can indicate some support from pricing, a more premium product mix or both, but neither factor was sufficient to counter the broader reduction in consumer purchasing.1

White wine and Tetra formats show greater resilience

White wine was more resilient than the wider still-wine market. The report did not provide details for every grape variety or price tier, and its overall finding suggests—rather than conclusively establishes across all segments—that white wines lost less ground than other parts of the category during the measured period.1

Packaging performance also diverged from the broader market. Dollar sales of wine in Tetra formats increased by more than 12% over 52 weeks, even as total still-wine value and volume declined in the shorter 4-week measurement window.1

Possible consequences for the beverage trade

If white wine continues to outperform red wine or other still-wine categories, suppliers could give it greater emphasis in chain retail and grocery. Continued Tetra growth could likewise strengthen interest in formats aimed at convenience-driven shoppers, buyers seeking lower price points and consumers choosing wine for different occasions.1

Wineries, importers and wholesalers can use such retail patterns when deciding which styles to prioritize, how to place products across price points and whether to expand or reduce particular packaging formats. For beverage companies operating across wine, beer, spirits and ready-to-drink products, more selective purchasing within wine may also influence shelf allocation, promotions and portfolio strategy during future resets.1
