Barolo Monvigliero: the Verduno Grand Cru

Monvigliero is presented as Verduno’s reference cru, covering approximately 25 ha in a natural amphitheatre at the northern edge of the Barolo DOCG zone. Its predominantly southern exposures lie between about 250 and 300 m. As a watershed between the Barolo hills and Tanaro valley, the site receives a constant circulation of humid river air.

The soil consists of thin, laminated, fossil-rich Sant’Agata marls with high proportions of silt and clay and very little sand. This compact, fine material retains water reserves. Wines from the site are associated with medicinal herbs, roots, spices, structure and balance. Giovan Battista Alessandria vinified the first pure Monvigliero in 1978; approximately twenty producers subsequently followed.
