Speziale: thirty years of Verduno Pelaverga DOC
The article traces written references to Pelaverga in Verduno to the late fifteenth century, while local tradition credits Blessed Sebastiano Valfrè with bringing cuttings in the eighteenth century. The grape remained in small plots until several producers began vinifying it separately during the 1970s.
Verduno Pelaverga received DOC recognition on October 20, 1995. Its sensory identity is associated with bright ruby colour, red berries and a distinctive white-pepper note. Fratelli Alessandria’s name Speziale combines the wine’s special place within the estate with the Italian word for spice. The anniversary account places the denomination at roughly 30 ha, around 20 producers and more than 200,000 bottles annually.
