The Doglianese hills form the southernmost part of the western Langa. The Tanaro bounds them to the west; the Barolo production zone lies to the north, and Alta Langa to the south and east. Their border position and comparatively high average elevation create broad views over the plain, the Alpine arc and the Barolo hills.

Limited growth from the 1960s through the 1980s preserved aspects of older life, from a reserved local character to a cuisine created from modest ingredients with considerable skill. Village fairs celebrate agricultural and culinary traditions such as Cisrà chickpea soup, Puciu medlars, Bue Grasso and sheep’s-milk Tume.

Winter brings snow-covered vineyards, quiet villages, soups, bagna caoda, chestnuts and other old recipes. The other seasons bring changing colors, aromas and flavors. The landscape alternates vineyards and woods above the Tanaro, with small hilltop villages, medieval towers and castles set against the Alps.
