The Contini Bonacossi Collection: our connection with art

Alessandro and Vittoria began assembling the collection during the 1920s and 1930s, travelling through Europe and buying through auctions, galleries and dealers. Renaissance paintings were joined by sculpture, furniture, carpets and ceramics, with works displayed at Capezzana as a private museum. Alessandro intended the collection to serve Italian culture rather than remain solely a private investment. After his death, the heirs fulfilled his intention to donate its principal nucleus to the State; the resulting Uffizi collection includes major works of painting, sculpture, furniture and ceramics.
