The Grape Harvest with Artificial Intelligence

An automatic optical sorter capable of examining berries and rejecting unsuitable fruit in real time was introduced at Fattoria del Cerro during the 2024 harvest. Its use expanded in 2025, marking a major step in the estate’s winery modernization.

The system learns from parameters established by the technical team and creates a customized selection program for each variety. It can distinguish suitable berries with stated accuracy of up to 90%, exceeding what can consistently be achieved by the human eye across the estate’s harvest volumes. The objective is ultimately to process all incoming grapes through the sorter.

Emanuele Nardi explains that the machine performs the physical selection but remains guided by human decisions. Antonio Donato places the investment within the strategy for the redesigned winery: advanced technology is intended to improve consistency, recognize work performed in the vineyard and unite production tradition with research and innovation.
