Technical data

Label / history

The wine is framed by Canon 924’s requirement that Eucharistic wine be natural, derived from grapes and uncorrupted. In Catholic doctrine, consecration brings about transubstantiation while the wine’s perceptible attributes—colour, aroma, flavour and quantity—remain. Canon law does not prescribe its colour. Red wine, symbolizing the blood of Christ, was used until 1880; it was gradually replaced by white wine for practical reasons, including reducing the visibility of stains on vestments.
