About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Colle Brezza lies between Pienza and Montalcino in Val d’Orcia, within the UNESCO World Heritage landscape. Its name refers to the light land breeze that regularly crosses the estate’s gentle slopes. The warm microclimate is moderated by winds and breezes.

The organic boutique farm covers 36 hectares and is surrounded by undisturbed woodland. It includes a natural white-truffle production area, 10 hectares of olive groves and 15 hectares of rotational crops such as forage, legumes and cereals, alongside plantings intended for pollinating insects and bees. The estate description identifies 5.5 hectares as devoted to native grape varieties, while the individual vineyard areas presented on the same page total 5 hectares; a further 2.3 hectares of new vineyards were planted in 2022 and 2023.

Five vineyard groups are described:

  • 1.5 hectares of Sangiovese, trained to Guyot, on loam with a high proportion of stones; vines are 20 years old.
  • 1.8 hectares planted with Sangiovese, Malvasia, Colorino, Canaiolo and Ciliegiolo, trained to Guyot, on loam with a high proportion of stones; vines are 8 years old.
  • 0.4 hectares of Pugnitello, Foglia Tonda and Mammolo, trained to Guyot, on loam with a high proportion of stones; vines are 4 years old.
  • 1.3 hectares of Sangiovese, trained to Guyot, on loam with a high proportion of stones; vines are 4 years old.
  • 2.3 hectares of new Canaiolo, Malvasia and Sangiovese vineyards, planted in 2022 and 2023 and trained to Guyot on loam with a high proportion of stones.

Grapes

The 2020 experimental work involved Sangiovese, Malvasia Nera, Canaiolo and Colorino. Other estate plantings include Ciliegiolo, Pugnitello, Foglia Tonda and Mammolo. No finished wine or final blend is specified.

Vinification

Grapes from the estate’s first harvest in 2020 were used for experimental micro-vinifications of Sangiovese, Malvasia Nera, Canaiolo and Colorino. This work continues with the aim of interpreting the individual characteristics of the varieties and developing a future wine.

Label / history

Colle Brezza takes its name from the light land breeze that regularly blows across the property. The supplied name identifies the estate rather than a released wine: no product name, vintage, classification, finished blend, technical analysis or tasting profile is presented.
