Syrah: Origin, Taste and Characteristics

The article describes Syrah as a dark-skinned variety used both alone and in blends. DNA profiling conducted in 1999 identified Dureza and Mondeuse Blanche as its parents, countering legends that connected the grape’s origin to the Iranian city of Shiraz.

Syrah bears small, dark, ovoid berries in medium, cylindrical and relatively loose bunches. Its wines naturally combine acidity and tannin, with colour, red- and black-fruit aromas and peppery spice among the highlighted characteristics.
