The 2023 Harvest at Donnafugata

The Etna vineyards received abundant rain in May, followed by above-average temperatures in July. Continuous vineyard work enabled the growing cycle to progress to the required level of grape maturity.

Picking began on 12 September with Nerello Mascalese intended for rosé, where the objective was to retain freshness. Carricante harvest started at the end of September. Nerello Mascalese for red wines entered its principal harvesting phase in early October after reaching the desired sugar and phenolic maturity, and picking continued through the final ten days of October.

Production declined noticeably, especially for Nerello Mascalese. Its bunches were less compact and the berries smaller and lighter than usual. Despite the reduced volume, the fruit delivered to the winery met the intended quality objectives.
