The Cammino di Khamma at Donnafugata: discovering Pantelleria’s biodiversity

Donnafugata inaugurated the Cammino di Khamma as a sustainable-tourism and biodiversity project within its Pantelleria estate. The lightly inclined walk begins at the Khamma winery and reaches a panoramic interpretation area after approximately 15 minutes among terraces and dry-stone walls.

The route presents plant species adapted to the island’s warm, dry conditions and volcanic soils, including Euphorbia, Lentisco, Fillirea, Caprifoglio, Tè siciliano, Ginestra villosa and Dafne Gnidio. Texts and illustrations explain their scientific names, morphology, properties and traditional uses. Agronomist Antonella Ingianni advised on the project.

Visitors also encounter caper plants and old creeping olive trees, which join the vine as symbols of Pantelleria’s agriculture. The route ends at the Osservatorio di Khamma, a viewpoint over the meeting of wild vegetation, cultivated terraces and human work. It complements visits to the Giardino Pantesco and the estate’s seasonal winery tours and tastings.
