Continuous spring rain in 2016 favoured downy mildew at flowering and fruit set. Wet, sloping terrain limited access for treatments, and the eventual crop was less than half normal. Fine conditions from August through most of October produced healthy ripening in the remaining fruit, without the late-August heat peaks that had previously scorched early-ripening skins. Pecorino suffered less damage, possibly because of its earlier flowering, while the reduced Montepulciano crop was directed preferentially toward Cerasuolo. Base sparkling wine, both Collepietro wines and the Santa Maria dell’Arco Trebbiano Riserva were not made.
