Florio and the English origins of Marsala

The historical account follows John Woodhouse’s 1773 encounter with the local wine, his 60-cask shipment to England, Admiral Nelson’s documented 1800 order and the later work of Benjamin Ingham and the Whitakers to improve grapes, musts, barrels and logistics. It then traces Vincenzo Florio’s purchase of land between the English houses, the foundation of a modern winery in 1833, expansion through the family fleet and capital, conquest of the Italian market and decisive commercial advance during the 1850s. It also connects the winery with the Florio family’s broader economic and cultural role during Sicily’s Belle Époque.
