Wine and Health
Mario Giribaldi’s essay summarizes research and publications that associated moderate wine consumption with cardiovascular and other physiological effects. It emphasizes polyphenols and antioxidant compounds, noting higher concentrations in red wine than white and highlighting Nebbiolo as particularly rich in polyphenols. It also discusses flavonoids, resveratrol, hydroxycinnamic acids, phenolic acids and minerals including magnesium, potassium, silicon, chromium, iron, copper and zinc.
The essay attributes possible effects to these compounds in relation to appetite, cholesterol, circulation, blood-vessel elasticity, coagulation, diuresis and red-blood-cell production. It also recounts historical research claims concerning antiseptic, anxiolytic and longevity effects. The conclusions reflect the author’s 2018 presentation of the research and should be read as a historical account rather than current medical guidance.
