About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from the organically farmed "Maccarj" plot in Val di Noto. Its clay and limestone soils retain moisture well, contributing freshness and concentration to the grapes. Yields are limited to 50 quintals per hectare. Organic practices and minimal intervention are used in both the vineyard and cellar.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested in the second half of September. A long skin maceration extracts flavour and colour, and the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine matures for 24 months in 500-litre oak barrels, followed by at least 12 months in bottle.
Tasting profile
Rich, powerful and boldly flavoured, with freshness and concentration. Ageing brings balance together with spicy and chocolate notes.
Serving and pairing
Pair with strongly flavoured foods, including spicy dishes, pasta or rice with meat sauces, and barbecue.
Label / history
Vito Catania and his family began the Gulfi winery in 1996. The estate combines modern technology with traditional Italian methods and now owns 70 ha of organic vineyards in eastern Sicily, producing six different Nero d’Avola wines. A large antique wine press near the estate has become a local historic landmark.
