The 2019 harvest: interview with Alessandro Cellai

The 2019 harvest was long and demanding across the four estates. Temperatures were far below average in spring and early summer, while heavy rain during flowering delayed the subsequent phenological phases. July, August and especially September then brought sunny days, moderate daytime heat and significantly cooler nights, favouring almost ideal phenolic maturity. Cellai described flexibility and rapid adjustment of vineyard management as essential under increasingly variable conditions. The variation was greater in Sicily and substantially prolonged the vegetative cycle. He expected wines combining complexity, freshness and ageing capacity.
