The 2015 harvest: the year of Capo Milazzo

The 2015 harvest marked the opening of the sixth Planeta winery at La Baronia. The new facility had been operating for several weeks by late October and had already received Nero d’Avola and Nocera. Four of the estate’s eight vineyard hectares were productive, using the Mamertino DOC proportions of 60% Nero d’Avola and 40% Nocera; output was expected to account for 35% of the denomination. The vineyards used marine-area training forms, including supported alberello, and were not irrigated. Research was planned for Vitraruolo, Lucignola and Catanese Nera, potentially leading toward formal recognition and future inclusion in Mamertino. Restoration also covered 20 hectares of ancient olive groves, natural paths and land that had previously been reduced to scrub and abandoned vines.
