About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The grapes are grown in Tuscany, where soils, aspect and climate have traditionally proved well suited to viticulture. The vines are Guyot- and Cordon-trained, with limited yields per hectare, on clay, limestone-marl and alluvial soils.
Vinification
All the grape varieties are vinified together, with maceration lasting 10 days.
Ageing
The wine ages in barrels and barriques, of which 30–35% are new.
Label / history
The House of Melini was founded in 1705 in Pontassieve, just outside Florence. Its wines were sold only in Italy until the mid-19th century. In 1865, Alfredo Laborel Melini developed a woven straw bottle covering that allowed the wines to be transported safely abroad. In 1877, the Florence Chamber of Commerce awarded Melini a diploma and Gold Medal for developing and strengthening extensive international markets for Tuscan wines.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Melini expanded by acquiring about 200 hectares of vineyards in the Chianti Classico area and building a new winery in Gaggiano di Poggibonsi, where it remains. Melini is part of the Italian Wine Group.
