History
The Palazzo and the Marocco family land
Palazzo Tronconi takes its name from a historic 18th-century building in Arce that was once home to the noble Tronconi family. Guests welcomed there included Ferdinand IV of Bourbon and Don Nicola Grossi, captain of the Arce town guard.
In the 1960s, during the time of Marco Marocco's grandfather, the family sold their ancestral farmland in the village of Arce and moved to Rome. There they founded a family-owned lift manufacturing company that became well known in Italy.
Founding and growth
The winery was founded in 2010 by Marco Marocco, a mechanical engineer, oenologist and winemaker, who bought back the ancestral land. His aim was to bring new life to the terroir of Lazio and its rare native grape varieties. For the first 5 years he made his wines in the original Palazzo Tronconi building.
A new winery building, designed by architect and oenologist Roberto Mazzer, was completed in 2015. The original Palazzo now houses the winery's small hotel.
Terroir
The winery lies on the outskirts of Rome in Arce, in the Lazio countryside, with views over mountains and valleys.
Winemaking
The vines are farmed according to biodynamic principles.
The wines are made with minimal intervention in the natural process. Marco Marocco ages them in concrete tanks, terracotta amphorae, and oak and acacia barrels.
The winery building, completed in 2015, has a production area on the basement level, including rooms for storing barriques and bottles. The upper floors house a restaurant, tasting room and offices, with a terrace overlooking the vineyards. The original Palazzo Tronconi, where the first 5 years of wines were made, is now the winery's small hotel.
Philosophy
The winery states that its goal is to make vibrant natural wines that reflect the character of their terroir. It describes its philosophy as nurturing the wine that begins in the vineyard and sharing the pure taste of authentic Italian wine in its most natural form. The founder's aim was to bring new life to the terroir of Lazio and its rare native grape varieties.
