Piccini 1882: a timeless journey into the Tuscan heartland

Mario Piccini recounts how Angiolo founded the winery in Poggibonsi in 1882 and how second-generation Mario used the nearby railway to seek customers beyond the Alps. The cellar was destroyed during the Second World War but was rebuilt, allowing the family to resume its international course by the middle of the century.

After taking leadership in 2004, fourth-generation Mario renewed attention to Italy while extending the family’s broader presence into other regions. He identifies Chianti Riserva Collezione Oro as the wine that most directly expresses Angiolo’s maxim about passion and the family’s Tuscan roots.

The interview characterizes Chianti through limestone and clay soils, warm dry summers, mild winters and hill-driven temperature variation favourable to Sangiovese. It also outlines a three-year route to Equalitas Sustainable Winery certification, the conversion of the family estates to organic farming and the introduction of advanced vineyard technology at a separately managed Chianti Classico estate.
