Una porta sulle Langhe. La famiglia italiana del vino arriva in Piemonte

The Piccini family’s arrival in the Langhe through the acquisition of Porta Rossa is framed through the history of the winery’s emblematic building. During Napoleon Bonaparte’s Italian campaigns, the French captain Assic became captivated by the Langhe and built a palazzo on a hilltop in Diano d’Alba for his stays in Italy. Its façade is dominated by the red door that gave Porta Rossa its name.

The palazzo later passed through the story of Savoy colonel Giuseppe Castellazzo, who assigned it a wine-related purpose. Vittorio Emanuele II also visited on several occasions during his stays in the Langhe.

In more recent decades, winemaker Pierfranco Bonaventura developed Porta Rossa into an international brand. His production outlook combines experience and tradition, close care of raw materials and cellar work, and maturation in large casks to develop structure and ageing potential.

The Piccini family subsequently assumed control of Porta Rossa together with its archive of past vintages. The continuation of Bonaventura’s territory-focused work was presented as consistent with the family’s broader aim of representing different Italian wine regions while respecting the bond between wine and origin.
