Into the Wine: Barolo DOCG Bergera – Pezzole 2021

The 2021 growing season was warm but remained unexpectedly balanced. Spring frost reduced yields, while the rest of the season produced more concentrated grapes without excessive alcohol and with pronounced aromatic richness.

Briccobergera comes from a single compact 8-hectare vineyard in the Novello area of Barolo. The site is approximately 400 metres above sea level and faces south to southeast. Harvest timing was chosen at phenolic maturity to retain balance among fruit concentration, freshness, acidity and tannin.

The wine was matured in large French- and Slavonian-oak casks. Its profile combines ripe plum, blackberry preserve, cherries in spirit and notes reminiscent of cugnà with developed ageing aromas. Flavio Fraschini considers 2021 particularly well suited to long development, while the 2022, 2023 and 2024 vintages are expected to be more immediate and fruit-led.
