Il più bello… “Orcia Sangiovese”

The Orcia DOC territory follows the Orcia River between the production zones of Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Val d’Orcia became a UNESCO World Heritage landscape in 2004, recognized as the first rural territory to receive that distinction. Its hills are framed by cypresses, castles, abbeys, farmsteads and medieval villages, while Etruscan and Roman objects connected with wine attest to a long history of viticulture.

The vineyards discussed lie at approximately 300 m above sea level. The broader area includes draining galestro soils and well-exposed sites selected for quality viticulture. Sangiovese is the principal grape of Orcia DOC, whose consortium was created in 2000 to protect and promote the denomination.

Sasso di Sole occupies the unusual intersection of the commune of Montalcino—home to Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and Rosso di Montalcino DOC—and the Val d’Orcia park and Orcia DOC area. Its Orcia Sangiovese is made entirely from Sangiovese Grosso and matured in large casks to retain the fruit-led character associated with young Sangiovese.
